Hosea Woodrow Cooper, Jr.

December 11, 1940-May 13, 1995

H.W. “Woody” Cooper

Woody Cooper, 54, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died May 13 at his home, surrounded by his family and friends, and beloved dog, Shaughnessy.

Born in 1940 in Dayton, Ohio, he was a realtor and hospital administrator who touched the lives of many through his work with Hospice of Broward County, Fla., and the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. For the last years of his life, he volunteered at the Fort Lauderdale Hospice and local AIDS organizations to promote AIDS awareness. Because of his workshops at city hospitals and nursing homes, several facilities that had turned away AIDS patients opened their doors. He was not only the caregiver for his partner David Jenkins, but Woody also took friends and strangers into his own home, taking care of them as they died of complications from AIDS.

Woody is preceded in death by his partner, David Jenkins (1992). Survived by his parents, Hosea W. and Willie Cooper of Dayton, Ohio; sister Brenda Cooper and brother-in-law Ted Pease of Petersboro, Utah; brother Jim Cooper and his wife Ann of Denver; brother Bob Cooper and his wife Christa of Cochise, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were May 14 in Fort Lauderdale.
Ashes will be buried at Bellbrook Cemetery, OH.
